Bigger-than-Life hopes to reveal the beauty that Nature holds. The voluptuous forms of the Giant Pumpkin and Acorn accentuate the promise of succulent fruit, and anticipate the potential for great things to emerge. Giant Pumpkins grow luminous stems of gold luster glass and Acorns are capped in iridescent gold glass. Produced in abundance of rainbow colors, in sizes and shapes ranging from 4" to 14" in diameter. Remarkable centerpieces grouped on the table -- equally awe inspiring, tucked under a bush in the garden--a hidden find that will guarantee stories of found allure.

"The summer of 1991 was foggy and cool. No pumpkins grew in the garden that year, but the vines produced gigantic leaves. We decided to make the pumpkins---in glass. We took the glass pumpkins outside and tucked them into the leaves where the translucencies of nature and glass combined--the garden was enchanted!" Michael Cohn and Molly Stone have been making glass pumpkins ever since, exaggerating nature's colors and forms to create unique works of art.

"The glass is like a living, moving thing and the shaping process is a choreographed dance. The end product is basically a record of the moves of the dance frozen in motion", Michael explains.

"Gardening and glass blowing are my two greatest passions, and these pieces combine the two. When I planned the studio's garden, I planted primarily foliage plants with emphasis on texture and form---the glass in the garden becomes the bloom." said Molly.

The Tortoise Shell series is a magical marriage of classical forms and boldly elegant color. The result is a contemporary work of functional art with a timeless beauty that fits in a wide variety of environmental styles.

Based on a process developed by artist Michael Cohn in the early 1970's, the Tortoise Shell pattern has evolved over many years into one of the Studio’s signature lines.

The process is complex—special furnaces were constructed to melt the four glasses required and daily testing is required to assure compatibility. In making a Tortoise Shell piece, the first step is to gather molten 2100 degress opaline luster glass onto the blowpipe and form it into an elongated bubble. This will become the inside of the piece and provide a luminescent golden glow which sparks the warmth of the Tortoise Shell pattern. Next, a milk glass layer is added, over which a special chemical mixture is applied. A very spectacular chemical reaction occurs when the next layer of small chips of a third formula of colored glass is added.

The temperature and the atmosphere in the glory hole (reheating furnace) while reheating during the decorating process, are critical to obtaining the desired color and character of the design. Finally, the decorated bubble is encased with crystal clear glass and blown into its final form. Each piece is created with a unique richness and depth of patterning—a timeless combination of contemporary and classical art.

The process of making the Shell Paperweight begins with a solid core of molten crystal gathered onto the blowpipe. Colored glass frits and powders are applied and the final shaping of the form is sculpted by hand. Each Shell is unique. The illusion of an open Shell form is revealed through a seven-step hand process of cutting, grinding, and polishing. The three dimensional quality of the interior reflects the magic of the sea, light, space, and glass.

The Pomegranate fruit holds a rich symbolic history of unity, fertility, rebirth and abundance. Ancient Greeks believed that it was Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who planted the first Pomegranate on the isle of Cyprus, and gave the fruit its reputation as a powerful aphrodisiac and “love potion”. In Greek, Roman, Persian, Hebrew and Chinese lore, the Pomegranate became a symbol of fertility. It has played a vital role in wedding traditions through the ages as a symbol of new beginnings. The prophet Mohammed recommended eating the fruit to purge the human condition from envy and rage. In Jewish tradition, Pomegranates are an emblem of prosperity and in Christian art, they stand for hope. Being a winter fruit, the Pomegranate is linked with ideas of a return to life and immortality. As a symbol for Unity, many hundreds of jewel like ruby seeds are full of brilliant life, nestled together within the garnet orb of one fruit.

Sweet Potatoes …nurtured by the elements of earth, fire, and the spirit of the artist. Full of life and light, in radiant translucent colors. Unique and individual every one—each with new growth leaves and special potato eyes. The Italian Potato group glows with the warmth of ochre, rust and olive. The Floral group appears to be growing in colors that will bring the excitement of spring’s new beginnings all year round – pinks, lavenders, and crisp greens. Reflecting the exotic colors of life forms growing deep in the ocean reefs is the grouping named Sea Potatoes in aqua, turquoise and the most exotic purple imaginable. They appear to be moving with the flow of warm water currents. These pieces are designed by the artists to be grouped in threes, but successfully grown (and sold) individually as well.

Hot glass is spun and woven by hand at the end of the blow pipe into a nest form. The molten quality of the glass is frozen in time. This piece reflects a warming symbol for promising dreams, successful endeavors, or reward for a job well done. The Large Nest is approximately 15” diameter and holds three very large eggs full of dreams and positive beauty. The Small Nest with one egg is about 6” in diameter and is simply a very precious object.

The Reflecting Bowls glow as if creating their own light source. The thick walled spherical forms are cut and polished on the top surface creating the illusion of a floating inner color shell, utilizing the glass’s inherent qualities of light and optics. The interiors are gilded with 23k.gold, copper or silver and lacquered in the age old leafing process. A warm radiant incandescence creates a meditative work of art.

Aurora—the Greek goddess of dawn, a luminous phenomenum, the numerous colors contained in light. Look closely and you will find that a multitude of colored glass particles combine to create what appears at first sight to be purple or moss. These magical pieces are rimmed with a gold luster glass adding a shimmering elegance to each piece. Perfectly functional, designed for a true gardener—an exceptional and beloved flower deserves a vase of exquisite beauty.

Who isn’t awed by a bird?
I look to the subject of the bird as a means to express ideas of Divine watchfulness, earthly interpretations of Divine wisdom, and reflections of ultimate Natural beauty. I have always watched and loved birds. I delight in their presence. I enjoy the ideas of the bird as icon of symbolisms throughout the ages and varied cultures. I aspire to connect my artistic work with my joy and respect for the beauty and the wisdom carried by a bird.

COHN-STONE STUDIOS

At COHN-STONE STUDIOS nature, inspiration, technical mastery and science come together at the hands of accomplished artists Michael Cohn and Molly Stone who create transcendent works of glass that inspire collectors, museums and galleries around the world.

Like the cycles of nature, works of art in glass emerge organically in the Studios from seasons of design, growth and production; from the seeds of an idea found in nature to mature pieces available in limited editions to the public. Cohn-Stone's award-winning and widely collected works are inspired by natural forms of leaves, fruit, flowers, birds, the human figure, creatures of the sea and the patterns of nature.

A unique feature of the San Francisco Bay Area based Cohn-Stone Studios is a Mediterranean/California style garden on-site, where inspiration flows to the minds of the artisans, and glass art finds its way back into the garden. Rare horticultural collections and displays are complimented by ever changing sculptural exhibitions. The Studios and garden are opened twice a year by coveted invitation, sought by collectors and gardeners alike.

Since 1980, Michael Cohn and Molly Stone have shared a love of nature, process, materials and design as well as a commitment to creating artworks of the highest quality and innovation. Their Studio is one of the nation's foremost producers of award winning designer vases, decorative art pieces and one of a kind works of art. Their work has been exhibited throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, Japan and South America. Their works are included in numerous museums, corporate and private collections worldwide.

Cohn-Stone glass represents a profound exchange between nature and art and each piece is destined to become a cherished heirloom for generations.

MICHAEL COHN

For as long as I can recall, I have made things with my hands. It is what I do. It is one of my primary forms of expression. I am also completely fascinated by fire—by its incredible power to destroy as well as to create. It is appropriate then, that I have devoted the greater part of my life to the creation of objects of glass (or primarily glass).

The act of glass making is elemental—it involves earth, air, fire and water. It is a series of choreographed steps—a firey fluid dance, of which the end result is a record of the moves of the dance frozen in motion. Even after working so closely with this material for so many years, I am still amazed that a pile of what appears to be basically sand can be shoveled into the furnace and the next day can be transformed into essentially anything ones imagination, skill and strength will allow. Physics, alchemy and magic each play a part in the process.

I am inspired by the purity of the classical forms and the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as by the ingenuity and functionality of machinery. I derive equal satisfaction in the creation of high quality decorative and/or sculptural glasswork as well as in the design and construction of the furnaces, ovens and other equipment, which make the work possible.

MOLLY STONE

The design of my work is influenced by my respect and awe of the Natural world, beauty of form and color, and the inner Spirit of the moment. I choose to look towards the positive, the beautiful, and the spiritual for inspiration. I hope that my work reflects Joy, as that is how I experience working with the glass, and what I find has great importance in life.

I love the process of making glass. I love the movement, the focus, and the timing that glass demands. My hands feel as though they are doing what comes naturally when I work with this material. Glass seems alive to me, hot or cold, alive and ever changing with light and with beauty. I take delight in, and learn from the glass everyday.
